Whilst visiting Guernsey, why not take your adventure to the sea to experience our island like never before? Island RIB Voyages offers an alternative view of Guernsey and our sister islands, from the sea looking back to land. Explore secret bays, speed beneath cliffs and visit coves aboard one of their modern twin engined rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) whilst looking out for beautiful local birdlife and sea life (you may even spot a dolphin!)
All tours begin in St Peter Port, a short distance from the Bella Luce, and you can take your pick from a number of different tours and destinations, including Sark, Herm, Hanois Lighthouse or you could chose their "Big Adventure" and visit Gorey in Jersey then see the magical islands of Les Ecrehous. Island RIB Tours come highly recommended, and achieved a Trip Advisor certificate of excellence award this year. The RIBs s are rigid-hulled inflatable boats which seat 12 people safely and due to the inflatable collar, are virtually unsinkable as well as limiting roll (which helps to prevent you from feeling sea sick). The team behind Island RIB Voyages are fully trained, incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable - from your safety down to commentary on local history, wildlife and folklore, they ensure that your experience out at sea is one not to forget. The boats are fully equipped with safety gear, and lifejackets and waterproofs are all provided for you too. All you need to remember is your sense of adventure and a warm jumper!
The Herm Explorer trip gives you the opportunity to get close to a nearby seal colony and circus of puffins, whilst "Legends of the Coast" is full of tales of pirates, shipwrecks and smugglers from the east coast of Guernsey. If you want to see the south coast cliffs that you may have walked and enjoyed during your visit to the Bella, the Hanois Lighthouse Adventure travels along the south coast to the Hanois reefs and impressive lighthouse off Guernsey's south west coast, passing impressive WWII fortifications along the way and making several short stops.
We caught up with Laura at Island RIB Voyages to find out more about the adventures that they offer and why it is an experience of a lifetime.
What do you like the most about your job with Island Rib Voyages?
I absolutely love meeting new people from all over the globe. I'm very passionate about the Bailiwick of Guernsey and what it has to offer and I love sharing that with all of our customers. Making people smile is definitely a highlight of the job!
Which is your favourite tour to take?
Now this is a tricky one as all of our trips are very different! I love our Herm Explorer Wildlife trip as I could quite happily spend all day with our local wildlife. But the coast and the caves around Sark are breath-taking, I feel like I could be in a movie or something! It's too hard to pick as they very diverse!
Where's your favourite place on the islands?
My favourite place has to be one of the caves in Sark. It's where my fiancé proposed! We visit the caves almost every day in the summer but it was one of the places that we wanted to explore a bit more in our own time after the season. Now every time we do that trip it feels very personal and special.
What sort of sea life and birdlife can people spot from your boats?
There's so much wildlife in the Bailiwick! For the birdlife we have everything from our gorgeous puffins, guillemots, oyster catchers, shags, cormorant, loads of different types of gull, even the occasional gannet! We have a colony of Atlantic grey seals at the humps which seem to be thriving - they are very cute and charismatic to watch! And then of course if you're lucky there's even dolphins.
What do customers like the most about the tours?
We are very keen on our customer service and we love for people to enjoy everything about their experience with us. It's exciting, fast and thrilling at times but we try to balance that out with stories, interesting commentary and wildlife spotting. It's great to take locals out to places they've never been before too. It's great fun for all the family, there's something for everyone, from 4 to 94 years old!
Can you share your favourite tale or folklore with us?
I enjoy the tales of headless men, werewolves and slobbering, scary black dogs haunting the bays, beaches and cliffs of Guernsey... All tall tales spread to put the locals off visiting the coast at night so that piracy and smuggling could take place.
What's been you most memorable moment working with Island RIB Voyages?
This has to be a moment from last year's season... The dolphins were out in full force last year and we stopped to watch them on this particular trip. There were a few swimming about but then suddenly one just leapt out the water so close to us. I managed to get it on camera too! The video is on our Facebook page...
