Party Season Preparation: Winter Skincare with Bella Spa

Winter can be a tough time of year for your skin, even in a comparatively mild maritime climate like Guernsey’s. The cold and windy weather combines with the dry heat of those cosy log fires and central heating to dehydrate and damage your skin.

“As winter temperatures fall and the air gets drier, your skin pays the price. This can lead to cracks in the outer layer of skin, loss of hydration, and ultimately, inflammation.”

- Hayley Fox of the Bella Spa

With Christmas party season about to hit its stride, Bella Spa’s Hayley Fox shares her tips on healthy winter skin and how to ensure that you’re looking your best at this challenging time of year:

  • Hot showers, however tempting, can remove the skin’s natural oils and leave it exposed. If you can bear it, have a warm shower rather than a hot one and dab yourself dry before applying a thicker moisturiser.
  • If you can swap a shower for a bath, then do so! Not only is it more indulgent and relaxing, but by adding bath oils you can keep your skin hydrated at the same time.
  • Still apply sunscreen! Even though the days are shorter and we see the sun less in winter, the most damaging UVA rays penetrate the clouds. Look for a sunscreen with a high UVA rating, and consider taking a vitamin D supplement to make up for the fact that sunlight (specifically UVB wavelengths) stimulates your body to produce vitamin D.
  • Switch to cream-based cleansers over the winter as they are gentler on your skin.
  • Use a richer moisturiser on your face before going to sleep at night.
  • If the cold weather causes you to get dry and chapped hands or knuckles then use a hand cream or ointment (rather than a lotion). Washing your hands or doing the washing up with hot water will strip away the skin’s natural oils so wear waterproof gloves for the washing up, and moisturize your hands after washing your hands.
  • Keep hydrated! Just as it is important to drink lots of water in the warmer summer months, in the winter drinking water or anti-oxidant rich green tea will help you and your skin to stay hydrated.
  • Wear a protective lip balm to prevent chapped lips and to help dry and cracked lips to heal.
  • Have a professional facial, and do so on a monthly basis if you are able to supplement your daily skincare routine. We’ll help you to keep your skin clean and clear so that you’re looking your best.
